I write because I love to write, because there's not much I'd rather be doing. There's something about arranging little black letters on a page
(or computer screen) that I find extremely satisfying. If I never sold a book, I would still write, just because I can.
Because I love writing.
How about you: Why do you do this? Would you keep on writing even if you knew you'd never sell a book?

Yeah .. I will keep writing irrespective of anything (unless someone gives me a hundred billion to stop writing)
Well, I write to become immortal. Writing is fun and people read it, they get to know me, they shall like me and I shall become immortal!! (I know, I am selfish.. but it is that way)
with warm regards

I too love writing - I love words and books and pages and fonts. ;) And I looove the people who talk to me in my head. hehe
I'm glad we don't know we'll never sell a book, because I think I would still keep writing and it would be depressing to know the stories weren't going to be read and enjoyed.
Luckily we don't know and even as I type this, someone could be reading one of my mss and deciding to accept it. Or maybe that'll happen tomorrow.
Hmmm. This is a good question. I would still write even if I knew that I would never sell a book, but I probably wouldn't write if I knew that no one would ever read a word. I'd still write a diary because that's for my eyes only anyway, but I wouldn't slave away on novels if no one would ever read them but me. To me, that's the whole point - sharing my stories with a reader. Getting paid for it is obviously the dream, but not the be all and end all.
Awh cute L! :O)
I write because I can't NOT write, it's as much a part of me as breathing, I never made a conscious decision to 'become a writer'. But I agree with Cally that sharing one's stories with others is a large part of the enjoyment.
Love hate relationship going on here. I write because I have no choice.
If I didn't continue writing, what would I do with all the ideas that pop into my head?
I did a post on why I write just last week! I found I write for a bunch of reasons. Some selfish, some idealistic, but all are a part of me!
I have given this question much thought over the years. I guess my love for this craft can best be summed up in this quote from the little lady who inspired me to take up my pen in the first place, Anne Frank: "I feel like writing, and I have an even greater need to get all kinds of things off my chest."
I write to connect with myself, to connect with my higher power, to minimize (and thereby be able to deal with) the bad and preserve the good, and finally, yes, I hope to share my writing with the world someday. If that never happens, though, it doesn't matter: I will always write.
Me too. Well said :)
Yes, I would! Although part of the point is to have people read what I've written. As long as I have a few critters reading and enjoying my novels, that would probably be enough!! ;o)
I absolutely would keep on writing even if I never sold another book. I am finding blogging very rewarding with its instant audience and wonderful writerly people.
I do enjoy writing, however fitful a writer I may be.
Even if I was to give it away for free I would still write. I do it because I love it. I can create and express myself. It is my passion...
I love writing too! I'll never stop, even if I never sell a book. So far, I have over 200 short stories penned, with a couple in print. I write because I'm passionate about the craft; it's that simple!
I think we are all just ideas machines, and if we don't eject them, we shake and explode :)
I have considered quitting many times. I have been writing for --
(oh I seemed to have cut out there for a moment) years. A loooong time. I only have a few things published. It can prove discouraging. I always threaten to leave it behind me for good, but always end up coming back to it.
I would definitely keep on writing even if I knew I'd never sell a thing. I just love to do it. :)
I work on the assumption that I'll never publish and therefore I do it for the sheer joy of telling a story. So far, it's keeping me happy.
Sometimes when I have trouble sleeping, I stare at the ceiling and say all of the action verbs I can think of till I eventually drift off. So, even though I have two published books, I think I'd write no matter what. I mean, why let all those good verbs go to waste? :-)
It's only recently that I decided I would try to be published. Before that I wrote several novels "just for fun" and because the characters wouldn't shut up. So yes, I will always write. Published or no.
Stickynotes, your post made me laugh out loud... my characters won't shut up either! LOL!
I will continue to write no matter what:)
More than anything, I write because the stories inside my head want to get out! So I suspect I'll be writing for all of my life.
Yes!!
Yep, those ideas just keep coming and recording them gives me peace. Writing is something I love doing...except when I'm feeling guilty about not doing it!
I think there's a contradiction in there somewhere...
Banned complain !! Complaining only causes life and mind become more severe. Enjoy the rhythm of the problems faced. No matter ga life, not a problem not learn, so enjoy it :)
