By listening to what people whose opinion I trust say about my work and by engaging with other writers. Putting my work up for critique and taking the responses seriously. Reading inspirational books by other writers. Keeping writing.
I visit writing blogs, read writing books, submit to my crit group, and write. Writing is the best way I know of putting all those writing lessons to practical use.
The light comes on is some of the most unusual places.

Like Charlotte I really learn from the comments of my beta readers. I keep thinking I should be reading any of dozens of books on the writing craft...but in the end I seem to come back to the realization that I learn most about writing by reading widely, and by writing.
By listening to those who know a lot more than I do! (And recognizing when I need to listen:)
I'd get so bored if I knew everything! ;)
Good post. So far, I have been writing and reading but I plan to send a novel to beta readers as soon as I do an edit. I spent years practicing different parts of writing and now am working on using those to write novels. I hope I always keep growing as a writer.

Love reading your posts. What I do? I watch, I listen, I write.
Along with blog reading and craft books the most helpful thing has been studying published books to see the craft in action.
Good post. It's hard to pin down exactly what I do to grow as a writer. I read (a lot), I participate in a critique group, I look at writing books and I write a lot. So, pretty much everything I do, see and hear actually helps me grow.
I've lived by the premise that you can learn something from everyone. Writing is the same. Some times it's a big thing and other times you don't even know you've learned it.

I try to learn something from everyone I encounter in the writing community. I agree, when you stop growing you aren't really living up to your potential.
I read as much as I can. A practice writing all the time.
I love learning and I sure hope that I never want to stop. How do I grow? I listen and apply what makes sense to me.
Write ... this challenge is giving me a huge way to grow as a writer. I am doing a different flash fiction piece each day with a riddle twist to it. It's quite challenging to come up with a totally different piece each day without it being the same as previous.
I hope I can keep the interest fresh. That's my challenge for this month.
Once I started to focus on craft while reading, it made reading for enjoyment more difficult. But I still find reading a great "teaching" tool. Also, I take classes at the local writing center and I follow helpful writing blogs--like this one!
Thanks for getting back to me yesterday Rach. I really appreciate it. I am old enough to know I will never everything about anything. This challenge has given me so much already....not sure the brain can hold all the wonderful information.
To grow as a writer? I visit Rachael Harrie's blog of course and absorb her wisdom.
To grow as a writer- I take classes on writing in college, I participate in writing prompts, blogfests, and flash fiction challenges- I write, :)
I keep reading a broad range of books. I also have tried writing novels with other people because it makes me more aware of my characterization.
By learning of course! It could be from anywhere - from CP's, books, courses..and even day to day conversations around us... And the internet is a big world :) A never-ending source of information.

I grow as a writer in three ways: I write, I read, I live.
And if that all fails, I trade a cow for a bunch of magic beans.
Good advice. I continue to read hundreds of craft articles, read books on writing and try new things with my writing. Thanks to your challenge, I wrote my first sensible piece of flash fiction. Thanks!
i try to write every day, read every day and absorb bits and pieces from others and my own writing!
I think the most important thing to do is simply write. As you said, there is a lot to learn. Personally, I feel the act of doing allows us to grow better than anything else.
