Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, we'll pack, we'll clean, we'll go...

Well, this is it. I'm really moving!!!

I'll be leaving Sydney, largest city in Australia (population approx. 4.5 mill or so)

And heading to Canberra, capital of Australia (population approx. 350,000. Yep, thousand. Not million. Look at all those trees!)

GULP!!!

Anywho, after a nightmare couple of weeks cleaning and throwing out STUFF, the removalists are finally coming. Tomorrow. Exciting and exhausting and a little scary, all rolled into one.

Let's talk about Stuff for a second shall we? I simply cannot believe how much stuff I've accumulated that:
  1. I didn't even realize I had until it waved at me from the dark corner of a cupboard I haven't even opened in a year
  2. I never use but still want to keep because someone special gave it to me, or I acquired it during a significant occasion/event (which may or may not have involved too much alcohol), or [insert completely made-up-on-the-spur-of-the-moment reason which my husband didn't believe anyway]
  3. I'm sure I'll fit into one day. Honest. So how can I throw it out knowing that???

Um, sensing a theme perhaps? Yep, I hate throwing stuff out. What about you, can you bear to part with all your knick-knacks and treasures during a move? Or do you fight tooth and nail for just one more teensy little box to put this or that or the other in???

I've managed to get Daughter No. 1 excited about the move (I can only imagine how scary it must be for a 3 year old to leave everything she knows behind). I've also reassured her numerous times that yes, we will be bringing her bed and dolly and her scooter and her books and our washing machine (it's funny what ranks on her list of most important items!).

So, after all that, the removalists are coming tomorrow. Boxes will be taken away tomorrow and maybe Wednesday. Then comes cleaning (is there anyone that enjoys that part of the move?). And then, on Thursday, we're driving the three and a half hours to our new city. After that, the fun of organizing the new house begins...

DISCLAIMER: I should add that I moved quite a bit growing up, so I'm rather used to moving. And my husband's work entitles us to packing as well as removal, so life is rather good there! And I grew up in the country and only moved to the larger cities later in life, so I'm rather looking forward to going to somewhere a bit (tee hee, a lot!) smaller for a change. It's all good really.

Wish me luck. I'll keep you posted on how things shape up in Canberra...

Good luck on your move! I assume Canberra has a lot of unique features, since it's the Capitol? That sounds like an exciting adventure for you and your family.

I find it can be very clensing to move every now and then. I'm a total pack rat.

Good luck, Rach! Sounds like an adventure! I'm a toss-it-NOW person. I like to get rid of stuff almost as much as I like accumulating it! Clear it out and start anew! : )

Wow! Well, I hope you have a great move. I'm the opposite, I hate keeping things. I throw everything away.

I’ve been trying to find good homes for some of my belongings. If I’ve got to get rid of things, I’d like to think they’ll be looked after.

All the best with your move, hope it all goes smoothly.

Comment from an obvious foreigner:

1. I had NO idea Canberra was the capital of Australia. I hadn't even heard of it, but I like when capitals are smaller than largest cities. (In the state of Washington, Seattle is the largest city, yet the capital is Olympia. I know, totally doesn't compare because it's just a state, but I like the principle.)

2. I am in love with the fact that the people that take boxes out of your house are called removalists. 'Round these parts they're only called "movers" but I think removalists is much, much more apt.

3. Good luck! I hope the move goes very, very well. Also, it sounds to me like you're doing a good job helping your little one prepare, and giving her voice and a feeling of some control (as far as what she can be sure won't change in the process) in the matter. That should definitely help her adjustment. Hope it all goes smoothly!

Good luck with the move! :)

I don't really like throwing stuff out, either . . .

I hope the move goes well, Rach. It's always a plus when other people are responsible for the packing and moving parts.

I have no problem parting with things. I just wish we didn't accumulate so much to begin with... :)

Wow, that will be quite the change in scenary. I'm nervous about moving too (not that we're doing it for a few more years). My husband has made it quite clear, a lot of our junk won't be coming with us. ;)

Ooh, Canberra eh? Do I feel a deep freeze coming on? Totally great that moving/removalists are included thanks to hub's job, but all the same, horrible task! Be interested to hear how it all goes. You wouldn't want to be in 'sunny' Queensland at the mo'! Not that I've been anywhere near the floods, but family members are. Totally awesome! Happy New Writing Year!

Removalists is my new favorite word. :)

Good luck with the move! I hope Canberra treats you really well.

Is it true what they say about Canberra, that it's basically a huge park with a city tucked inside it? Because I think that sounds delightful.

Oh wow, good luck on the move! That's cute your daughter wanted to make sure the washing machine was coming ;p I moved a lot when I was younger too, but it's still hard every time! Have fun!

Hey guys, thanks heaps for all your comments and good wishes. You know, I had NO idea you didn't use the word "removalists" in America. Now I think about it, the word is pretty funny!

Can't wait to see our new house, I might even post some pikkies one of these days :)

I've always wanted to go to Australia. Where you're going looks wonderful! But I'll have to travel there with the Bloggers who live "downunder." Isn't it amazing that we can do this?!

I'm new to your blog. I found you through Karen Gowen (Coming Down the Mountain). I like your place!
